What are my breast implant options?
Breast implants come in many shapes, sizes, styles, and materials. In general, there are two basic types of implants:
Saline implants
Saline implants are the traditional breast augmentation device which have a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline (saltwater) solution. They tend to be firmer than silicone implants, and can be a good choice for women who have substantial existing breast tissue and/or who want more upper breast fullness or additional cleavage. In the rare and unlikely event of a rupture, the saline will be harmlessly absorbed by the body. Saline implants come in many sizes and profiles to suit your specific needs and goals.
Silicone implants
Silicone implants combine the most advanced breast implant technology and are composed of a silicone shell surrounding a silicone gel interior. These types of implants are the most popular because they resemble the feeling and consistency of normal breast tissue. Silicone implants are particularly recommended for women with thin skin and slender frames, although virtually anyone can benefit from the choice. In the unexpected and rare event that a silicone implant should rupture, the internal material is designed to safely remain inside the shell due to the innovative cohesive-gel composition. Silicone implants also come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and profiles to meet your needs and desired outcome.

During your initial consultation, he will also discuss implant profile (how much projection you would like), shape (teardrop or round), and size options with you.
What are my incision location and implant placement options?
Breast implants come in many shapes, sizes, styles, and materials. In general, there are two basic types of implants:
In addition to implant choices, you also have a selection of incision locations and placement options. As for incisions, the implants can be placed using one of three techniques:
Inframammary
incision underneath the breast within the breast fold
Periareolar
incision along the outer edge of the areola (pigmented area around the nipple)
Transaxillary
incision within the crease of the armpit
Each approach has specific advantages, and Dr. Schlenker will work with you to decide which option is best for you while minimizing the visibility of any scars. Breast implants can also be placed above or below the muscle, and, again, there are distinct benefits to each choice which will be discussed at the time of your consultation.
What will breast augmentation recovery be like?
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, therefore, you will be able to return home after surgery to rest and relax. Most patients take about a week to recover before going back to work or resuming normal activities, and you should listen to your body to help determine when you are ready. Dr. Schlenker will provide detailed instructions on aftercare and prescribe medication to help minimize discomfort. Swelling and tenderness in the treated area is normal, and these effects will gradually diminish over time. Similarly, your scars should also begin to soften, fade in color, and smooth out over the course of several months. We advise patients to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercises for at least four to six weeks, and Dr. Schlenker will let you know when it is appropriate to return to specific activities.
When will my breast augmentation results be final?
While some of the changes from your procedure will be immediately visible after the operation, it usually takes about three to four months to see the final result. During the initial post-operative period, the breasts will be swollen and firm, and the implants may rest at a higher point within the breast. As the swelling resolves, overlying skin relaxes, and implants settle into their final position, the breasts will become softer and develop a more natural shape.
What other procedures may help me achieve my goals?
Other procedures besides breast augmentation may be more appropriate or appealing to you, depending on your cosmetic goals and current breast shape. If you are experiencing some breast ptosis (or sagging breasts), a breast lift may be able to help restore the shape and fullness of your breasts. If you have previously undergone breast augmentation, a breast revision procedure may help achieve your desired results.
