Post-Weight Loss Body Contouring Surgery

One of the most difficult accomplishments is losing a significant amount of weight. Individuals who are able to improve their health with substantial fat loss deserve recognition and accolades, whether they used traditional diet and exercise or bariatric surgery to succeed. Dr. Robert Schlenker, our experienced plastic surgeon, understands that once the weight is lost another concern may develop. Skin may not shrink back once weight is gone, leaving loose tissue that obscures the body and can reduce the pride felt in this tremendous achievement. Post-weight loss body contouring surgery can help. A number of techniques can be used to eliminate excess skin and create a firmer, more toned-looking, and slimmer figure. During your initial consultation, Dr. Schlenker will discuss your needs and goals and develop a personalized treatment based on your concerns.

Is post-weight loss body contouring right for me?

If you have excess skin that causes chafing, self-consciousness, or other concerns, post-weight loss body contouring may be a suitable solution. Patients considering this treatment should be in good health, be nonsmokers, and understand what can and cannot be accomplished by this procedure—all of which will be covered during the initial consultation.

What if I have more weight to lose?

It’s a good idea for patients to be close to their goal weight when they begin to consider body contouring surgery. We recommend that you be within about 20 or 30 pounds of your desired weight, as additional weight loss could affect the results. If you have a few pockets of fatty tissue that are resistant to diet and exercise, liposuction can be added to your treatment plan to address these concerns.

How long does recovery after post-weight loss body contouring surgery take?

Since every patient’s treatment will be unique, so too will the recovery process. Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, so you will most likely be able to return home the same day as the operation. Additionally, soreness, swelling, and bruising are common effects following any of the body contouring procedures – symptoms that should subside after a few weeks to months. Some residual swelling beyond this point is normal, although you may not notice inflammation after a few months. Scars can take time to heal, but they should gradually lose color and become flatter and less noticeable with time.
